I have to admit I am not great at recognizing individual animals. I know some grizzly bears like Quad Mom, Hobo, and of course Scarface, as well as Rosie, the black bear with 3 cubs, but I don’t know all of them, and I certainly don’t know this one. I think it is a male. I know it killed a baby elk a couple of days ago on the north side of Yellowstone Lake. Look underneath him and you can see the baby elk. I didn’t see him kill the elk but I heard from people that saw it that he jumped from a log way up in the air and then landed on the baby. I know that is what he is supposed to do but it made me feel bad for the elk and its mom. I definitely want all grizzly bears to survive, as we don’t have enough of them. And I know we have way more elk than grizzly bears, but it still makes me sad. Poor little thing never had a chance. On a lighter note I thought it was funny that as he was eating he would look up occasionally while resting his head on a downed tree. Looked kind of lazy or maybe just unbear-like, whatever that means. The next day he came back to the carcass and ate for at least 30 minutes. We were surprised there was that much left over. Then he casually walked across the road and towards the lake. I never saw him look at all of the humans around even once. Who ever he is, I wish him good luck and happy hunting.

I saw this grizzly while I was there. Pretty sure its the same one because of the light coloring on his face. Like he stuck his head on a honey jar. When i with him, he never looked at the few of us gathered either. Sorry for the elk babe.
Circle of life.
Nice photos even if the story is a bit sad. Not sad for the grizzly.
He is a pretty grizzly. Yes, the whole elk calf thing is getting to me. Heard of so many being taken down today, it was tough. I am home!
Love his head on the log 🙂 he is a pretty bear.
Xxx baby elk. Xxx 🙁
