What a Difference a Year Makes

As many of you know last spring a female black bear around Calcite Springs came out of hibernation with 3 cubs. Some people began calling her Rosie. Rosie is a great mom. If she saw any sign of danger she gave some unknown (to us) signal and the cubs high tailed it up a tree. They spent lots of time playing and always seemed to have a great time. We all worried about Rosie and her 3 and as Deby has already told you she and her 3 cubs all survived the winter!

I wanted to celebrate that with a couple of photos of the 4 from last year and a couple from this year. As you can see those little guys have really grown. And they still high tail it up a tree when Rosie tells them to. I know this isn’t the end of their story but I love the happy ending to their first year.

  1. Great to see the size comparison. We were lucky enough to see them last May, but I’m afraid we won’t be going until later in the summer this year.

Out of curiosity, how long do the black bears keep their cubs with them? Any idea?

    1. You may get to see them together but maybe not. Black bears keep their cubs for a year to a year and a half. Most people around here think she will kick them out if she finds a male to court her and breeding season is starting. I know she is a very caring mom so maybe she will avoid the males and keep them for a while. Hard to say.
