Under the Rainbow

It was a short day in the park for me, due to errands and work, but I did manage to get out late this afternoon, into heavy rain, hail, snow, sunshine and rainbows.  For a time the rain was coming down so hard I did not know if photos would be possible.  But, a break came and the bison were crossing the road while a rainbow glowed off in the distance.

So, I sent some time watching the bison until I heard that a black wolf was wandering around out there somewhere.  That got my attention!

Turned out that it was Mystery, aka Starlight, aka Unknown, and she was just having a blast entertaining herself.  Jumping around at something, shaking dried grasses in her mouth and hassling a bison that chased her around a bit.  She wandered, chased a raven and then found a coyote that she enjoyed loping behind.  It was obvious that Mystery and the coyote have a regular thing going and are entertaining one another as she wasn’t trying too hard to catch up.  And, at one point coyote and wolf stood nose to nose.  Once again, this wolf managed to entertain me like few ever have – always joy and fun.

Clouds were covering the sun and it was getting dark when I left Mystery to wander the valley floor and head home.

Except, a number of cars were lined up at Coyote pullout and so I checked to see what they had.  It was the Lamar Canyons!  926, 965 and 993 all laid around lazily with fat bellies while T took a leg assembly back towards the den.  This means the pups are still alive!  What good news and a perfect way to end a long day.

  2. Deby, Great to read the stories again. I’ve been way too busy with work, school and life. It’s nice to be able to sit back early in the morning with a cup of coffee and catch up on the happenings in Yellowstone and see what you’ve been up to. Thanks again and always for what you do. Love the rainbow with the bison and all your photos.
