Swan Lake Swans

I love swans. They are so graceful and beautiful. We used to be able to find a number of pairs of swans in Yellowstone but over the years their numbers have declined. So now when we see one, or more, we always stop and admire them. One of the easiest places to find them in Yellowstone is Swan Lake on Swan Lake Flats. They haven’t nested there in a number of years but they do spend short periods of time in the spring and fall as they migrate.

We used to find them near the bridge over the Madison River between Madison Junction and West Yellowstone and in the ponds in the Lamar Valley. But we rarely see them either place now.

One of the most reliable places to find them in the summer is around the pond in the small town of Emigrant north of Yellowstone. The bank employees there used to feed them so we have seen them resting on the bank’s lawn. Pretty cute.

  1. Thank you everyone!! Deby I have never seen a fox pounce into the snow so we are kind of even. I can almost promise I will find you some baby swans this summer.

  2. Great photos. The babies are fantastic. I was near a Mute Swan when it took off to harass a Canada Goose and was shocked at the huge wingspan and the air displacement. Incredible birds.
