Black Bears Chase Tourists at Yellowstone National Park – NOT!!

Rosie and her Cubs on the Yellowstone River Bridge

A couple of weeks ago several news outlets posted a video of black bears “chasing” people on the Yellowstone River bridge near Tower Junction. The bears were only trying to cross the bridge, they weren’t chasing anyone. The park visitors in the video did not follow the Park Ranger’s instructions. Yesterday Rosie and her 3 cubs crossed the bridge again. I watched, and filmed, all of it. This time the visitors did listen to the rangers and the crossing went beautifully. The bears weren’t scared and the visitors got their photos. A wonderful job by Rangers Ed and John and the visitors who listened to them. It was a great experience for all. He is out of focus but notice what Ranger John does at the end. He kept great control of the crowd of visitors.

The following is a summary of what we’ve seen in the park over the last 2 days and a report from Deby. Yesterday we got to watch Rosie and her 3 yearlings cross the Yellowstone River bridge. As I said above the rangers did a wonderful job of anticipating her every move. Elk and pronghorn baby season is starting although neither are in full swing yet. Blaze and her 2 COY have been out around Fishing Bridge but are not reliable. This morning was devoted to flowers (pictures tomorrow) and this afternoon to watching Rosie and her 3 sleep, eat, nurse and walk around. The cubs don’t play nearly as much as they used to. A black bear sow and 2 COY were on Tower Hill most of the day but there aren’t any good places to pull off the road there so no photos. Mixed mom and her 2 yearlings were visible much of the day above Gut Road on the way up Washburn on the north side. When we saw them they were sleeping peacefully and appeared oblivious to the large crowd of people watching them.

The 2 great horned owl chicks in Mammoth have fledged. They are big balls of fluff begging their parents for ground squirrels.

From Deby: 926 was out and about, by herself tonight. She travelled west along the river and eventually disappeared into the trees.    Despite heavy rainfall she had plenty of fans watching her.
