Day 4 of Camping – braving the elements

Horned Lark in winter

We are braving the elements in Yellowstone!  Not as wintery as it was the day that I took this image of the Horned Lark but feeling mighty blustery.

So thrilled that I decided to take my trailer to the campground this year – it is working quite well and I had the first full night, without interruption, sleep in a long, long time.  Being in the park cuts my driving time by 2 to 3 hours every day, which gives me more time for rest.  And, not having internet, makes it impossible to do a lot of work – so I have to edit, write and post quickly while sitting at Slough Creek.  BTW, I will post more about the camping part of my adventure soon.  A lot of useful details that I can share with you.

Thinking that I need to look into getting a cell booster that will boost the cell phone and the wireless card, for better connectivity during my long hours in the park.  My brother called the other day and I nearly freaked out when my phone howled (wolf howl ringtone) because I never get to use the thing.  And so I am out of touch with everyone, most of the time, unless on Facebook.  One of the drawbacks of spending most of my time in a national park.

When I originally began this journey it was my hope to live in national parks as much as possible, which is why I volunteered at two of them.  There is nothing like waking up day after day in the heart of nature. My plan was to work or volunteer in Yellowstone but when that fell through I had to make other arrangements.  And, so, if I work it right, I can wake up in Yellowstone for 45 days out of the year.  Thirty nights in this stretch and another 2 weeks after September first.

But, for now, the cold weather has returned, bringing incredible light, snow, rain, wind and sunshine.  And, lots and lots of grizzlies.  Lost count of how many were seen in Lamar and Little America today but a lot.  Sow and coy, two two-year olds, courting pair, three singles…and those aren’t the same ones we have been seeing, except the sow and coy.  Be careful out there, I do believe that the grizzlies are struggling for food right now, due to the low wolf population and the infrequency of carcasses.

Okay, I am at the house, having had a wonderful shower and done my laundry, but am headed out for the evening show.  Until tomorrow.

  1. Was in Lamar this morning and saw a grizzly running forever towards the carcass. He was so fun to watch! Think I also saw your sow and cub on the hill but my binoculars aren’t the best. I would love to see her clearly. Thank you for your wonderful posts and your photos are just incredible!
