Camping life

The thing about camping is that it doesn’t exempt one from the obligations of life, such as shopping, showers, laundry, paying bills, fueling up, washing the car, hauling water, fixing meals, etc.  With that list one might wonder when there is time for photography!

Well, there hasn’t been much time over the past two days but I did get some images this morning that I had planned to post but they are on my CF card and my CF card reader is broken.  Now, don’t worry, I can get all of the images off of my SD card, save them to the drive, delete and format and then my camera will allow me to copy the images from the CF to the SD and then we are in business.  But, all of those steps have to take place in order. Essentially, nearly everything is broken.

My new camera has to go to Nikon and so far it has taken them 2 days just to email the shipping label.  I am not happy with Nikon right now.

My AC is broken in the car and it is 73 degrees in the shade and the mosquitos are thick.  So, I have to have the windows down to let the mosquitos in.  I just took a shower but am covered in sweat.  The internet, with my new $250 booster would not work and would not work.  Somehow it finally started working but not without a lot more sweating and driving my clean car down a long dirt road. When I return to camp I need to haul water and clean up to get ready for tomorrow.

Will have a young lady with me tomorrow and don’t want to be too stinky. Don’t get me wrong, I love camping.  But, I don’t love the internet situation and since my work is internet based, it is suffering.  I am spending a large portion of my days chasing a signal and I thought that this booster would be the ticket but that does not seem to be the case.  Which means that I will need to send it back and start all over. Oh, and that 73 degrees – it was 32 this morning.  How is that for a change?

But, now for the good stuff:

I spent much of the morning waiting to see if Spitfire would come out, during which I discovered three baby pronghorn with two moms and one dad.  They were cute and curious and so I waited and waited for them to come closer, pretty much counting on them wondering about the strange lady with the camera.  And, the clicks.  They loved the clicks.  Dang!  A beautiful coyote just went right past me!  I missed the thing. And, so, eventually the babies came to the side of the road to check me out, peering through the sagebrush, about which time a guide comes zipping in, jumps out, slams the door, walks right past, stands in front of me, in a no no zone and just stands there.  He was clueless about what he was doing and I am sure just lacked experience, but it was frustrating. And then I was talking to MacNeil and one of his clients said, “There’s a wolf!” Spitfire was making her way across a hill and we got to see her for a minute.  There was one very happy young girl who was riding with MacNeil because she had watched Valley of the Wolves in an AP class and wanted most to see a wolf.  My day was made too. That was it for me.  I had gone into town yesterday for shower, laundry, post office, groceries, car cleaning, etc. and got the shower, laundry and groceries.  Missed the slip at the post office and was too late for propane and since I was trying to find my package, didn’t go wash the car.  So, today I had to do the rest.  After the car cleaning my neck was killing me so I took a long walk on a flat dirt road, carrying virtually nothing but bear spray and binoculars, in hopes of loosening my muscles.  Took an Ibuprofen as well.  So far it all seems to have worked and I should be good as new tomorrow.  Or as good as it gets.  I have found walking to be the best pain medicine there is and have been doing a lot of hikes lately, mostly without cameras because of the neck and back problems. Okay, well, that is it for me today.  Hopefully tomorrow and internet will be easier.

Everything is breaking and I keep plugging away.

  1. Well, I hope everything is back in working order soon, Deby. I would love to have some of your 73 degree weather here. Monday was 96, Tues. was 96, and today was 95 with humidity to match. But, we had a cool front come in- high tomorrow will only be —89! Take care and have a great day tomorrow.
