When the bears emerged into spring in Hayden Valley they were greeted with several feet of hard packed snow and very little green grass.  While some of the larger bears found bison carcasses in the Yellowstone River, the smaller bears found green grass at Mud Volcano.  Because the bears were all over the favorite thermal feature, park officials felt it was necessary to close Mud Volcano to visitors.

One ranger said that he went by to check on the bear status of Mud Volcano and found a family with small children in the closed area.  Minutes after he removed them, the ranger turned and found a grizzly standing exactly where the visitors had been.
