Yellowstone River Otters Part 2

Yesterday I showed you some photos of an otter family. Today I have some photos of two other otter families. A couple of years ago there were 2 adult female otters that had babies near the same lake. Some people said the 2 adult females were sisters. I don’t know if that is true but the 2 families did play together but they also occasionally fought each other as well. When they did it was invariably in the water so it was impossible to know what was going on. Way to much splashing to know if anyone got hurt. But it didn’t seem like they did.

One of the adult females had 3 babies and the other had 2 so that meant sometimes we got to watch 7 otters! It really was wonderful to see so many otters swimming, catching fish, and playing. We even saw all 7 each with their own fish one time. Some of the babies had fish bigger than themselves. It was one of those moments I will never ever forget.

    1. That is funny that you say that. I play that “I want to come back as” game with myself all of the time. Otters are at the top of the list. We were really lucky to have 7 otters that year but I couldn’t find any image with all 7 in it. The little guys never held still. One day I had a mom and 3 babies all to myself for several hours at Buck Lake. They chugged salamanders by the dozen. One of the best days of my life. They kept circling the lake while the mom caught salamanders and gave them to the babies. They circled and ate for a good while then crawled out on the rock that is in the lake and took a nap. Then they went down towards Trout Lake and disappeared. I sat there for 30 minutes afterwards just reviewing the whole thing in my mind. It was wonderful.
