The Fox and Badger Fight – The Whole Story

I saw a video on YouTube the other day of the fight between a female fox and a badger near the Yellowstone Picnic Area that occurred in May, 2013. There were a number of comments under it espousing that badgers never bother foxes, that the den belonged to the badger, and some other inaccurate statements. I hate it when people get it so wrong so I’ve made a 5 minute video of the entire story.

One thing I think that is really neat about that 10 day period is how nice all of the photographers were and that Deby was there (There is a photo of the photographers in the video and both Deby and I are in that photo.) but we didn’t know each other at the time. At one point a guy came around with cups and a coffee pot to warm people up. I told him how sweet he was but, no thank you, because I don’t drink coffee. He went back to his camper and made me hot chocolate!! I sure wish I knew who he was.

  1. Hi, Judy – Thank you for the YouTube info – I was able to view it. Amazing video – mother fox fought so valiantly for her kits. It sure was touching.

  2. Your right Deby. Did you find yourself in the photo of the photographers near the beginning? You are on the far right. I am to your left a little ways. Verne took the photo but now he can’t find the original.

  3. Hi, Judy – I’m not able to view your video (and I was so looking forward to watching it!). I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong (other than I’m quite computer-illiterate!) Any suggestions? Can I view it on You-Tube? Thanks for your help!

    1. Even when we knew the badger was down there killing the kits we still kept hoping for another miracle. There were a big bunch of photographers there during that time and you could have heard a pin drop. It was suddenly, without anyone saying a word, like we all knew we were at a funeral and everyone acted accordingly.

  4. Judy, what a powerful clip of what happened – Your videography is so powerful and the story so sad. You are right, we will never forget them – it was an experience that had us all crying at the end.
