I found the whole Canyon pack on the Blacktail this morning. 712’s collar no longer transmits a signal and none of the others are collared and so there is only one way to find these beauties and that is luck. Well, a whole lot of luck stopped me at the lakes to photograph some Sandhill cranes and while filming them some wolves began to howl off in the distance. Turned out that it was the Canyons with one 3 year gray female, along with 2 pups, one gray and one black. To know that these favorite alphas made it through another winter and then to see the White Lady big with pups was about as good as the news gets in wolf world.
After watching the Canyons I went out exploring. There are some moose hanging out near Blacktail Drive, just in case someone is looking.
And, finally, the first black bear (for me) of the season – Picnic Mom and her twin cinnamons.
Rick said that the Lamars were seen back in the valley this morning but only briefly. Maybe be around tomorrow. The Junctions were still on their carcass and Rick was telling me that all 3 females are pregnant and were digging dens at Slough Creek. This would be a much anticipated event if wolves were to den in full view.
Then went for a hike up to Calcite, which was very nice but I did not see much except for 3 white tail deer. Which is kind of rare up there.
A little more of Yellowstone wakes up every day. Exciting times.
What a wonderful day! Thanks for sharing!!!!?? just makes me smile?
Fantastic Deby! So very happy for you. In the right spot at the right time 🙂
Beautiful images and I think it sounds like a perfect day! The Cubs sure have grown and just seeing the Canyons together is wonderful!
