Well, my big news of the day was being able to see all 7 Lamar Canyon adults! Spitfire looks thin to me and it did not look like she had a full belly for the pups. But, her, Twin and Patch did make a quick visit to the den area, I hope to check on the youngsters. Boy do I hope there are youngsters still there. The activities of the pack have been puzzling lately and normally, I would say that if the wolves are returning to the den, the pups are fine. But, Spit loves her home and she will always return there, just not with the same frequency.
Anyway, the three went up to the den area while the other 4 stayed south and howled. So, finally wolves to see and I was happy. Happy to hear them howl.
They stayed at the den for less than 30 minutes before, one by one, they left and returned south.
I spent a little more time with the kestrels and was the only one there to see one of the babies fall to the ground. It was okay but its chances for survival just lessened. Hopefully, mom will feed and nothing will get to the youngster. See short video clip above.
Yesterday, Judy, Simon, Jill and I spent the day with the weasels and had a blast. Not many sightings but it was great fun and the babies were cute.
We watched, at one point, as a weasel ran up a dead tree, trying to hunt a bird. We were all pinching ourselves to have the opportunity to witness such action in the wild.
Other than that – Raspberry has been MIA for three days. Blaze strolled the beach two days ago and nearly got hit by a car when some creep belly crawled to get closer to her. She bluff charged him and then ran across the road. The Hayden sow is still being seen and Scarface has made regular appearances on Dunraven. The Picnic sow is still putting on a show for everyone and a black bear killed a fawn at Roosevelt and took it down to a cabin.
I was told that 911 was seen on the Pronghorn carcass in Little America and that it is gone. Apparently, someone killed a pronghorn with their car and it was drug way out to the Peregrines.
Camping is great! Days are long and hot. The park is busier than every.
Deby, I am making my journal posts and could you tell me: when we met at the bear jam west of Lamar, does that bear have a name that you call her? I am not sure and I don’t want to put the wrong name down for her. Black bear with two cubs. Thanks if you can help me. Is that area nicknamed anything special? Thanks.
Your posts make me even more excited to be there! 11 more days!
