Yellowstone Grizzlies of Late Fall

As Deby said in her most recent post Yellowstone is closing down, most of the visitors have gone home and it is wonderful! She called me one evening when she discovered a grizzly on a carcass at China Gardens. By the time I got there the bear was just leaving the picked over carcass and heading north. I heard he may be one of Quad Mom’s cubs. I don’t know if that is true but he sure is a beautiful bear.

Raspberry and her cub, Snow, have been putting on a good show lately as they try to fatten up for a long winter. It has been unusually warm for this time of year with very little snow. I guess the advantage to the bears is that it makes it much easier for them to dig for roots and such. The average adult grizzly can eat up to 20,000 calories a day in the fall when it is preparing for hibernation. Pretty impressive.
