Most of the elk in Yellowstone have their babies in the first part of June. There are a good number of elk in Yellowstone so you would think it would be easy to find those baby elk. But it can be really difficult and even harder to get a photograph of one. This one is a really new baby and it is the only one we got photos of this last June. They are so sweet and innocent but delicate as well. Look at those thin little legs. It is amazing they can get up as quickly as they do and they can run pretty fast too.
The mamas stash their babies while they forage for about the first two weeks of their life. There are some grizzly bears and a few black bears that get very good at finding baby elk.
Not all of the babies make it of course but it is amazing how many do. By the fall you almost have to look twice to know which are the mamas and which are the babies.
Our photos are available at www.vernelehmberg.com where you will find over 4,000 photos from Africa to Yellowstone.
You can. I were a pair of 6x magnifiers when I am filming. Also practice, practice, practice.
Very nice work Verne! And thank you for the story Judy. I never could find a new calf off of the lawn this year.
Thank you Deby. You would think those calves wouldn’t be that hard to find.
The photos that you and Deby take are always so well focused. I wish I could do that. These are really nice.
