Willow Flats on the west side of Yellowstone used to be THE place to see moose, but for the last twenty years or so the number of moose declined in Yellowstone and haven’t been seen much in Willow Flats. I don’t know if they have actually been there and haven’t been seen (the willows are pretty high) or the number of moose have really declined there. But this spring we have seen a couple of moose there.
A few days ago we saw one male moose pretty close to the road. We stopped and I got set up but just as I started to film him he bluff charged a lady and I worried he wanted to cross the road. He seemed afraid so we moved out of his way. I never got a shot of him. He did cross the road and I could see how big he really was. We went by there today and he was out in almost exactly the same place. This time I got set up and actually got a few shots of him.
What a handsome fellow! If you look closely at the photos you will see he has 2 little nubs of new antlers. I sure hope I can find him several times throughout the season and see how big his antlers get. I already know he is a tall fellow. I will keep you posted.
Great photos. It is obvious that moose are beginning to spread throughout the park.
