Well, I spent the entire day driving around looking for certain bears, otters and wolves and came up empty handed, except for the two wolves I saw in Little America first thing. But, everyone saw those!
Yep, the only thing I got was this frisky bull that decided to charge my car. Luckily, I got out of the way just in time.
But, Judy, on the other hand, got two of the three. She did spend all day looking for those otters, but I had already seen them and really wanted the bears and the wolf! Here is her great report.
We first went to the Lamar and didn’t see much. Then we saw Deby who told us about her 6 otters on the Madison River. We spent the rest of the day on the Madison, with a break to go into West Yellowstone to get gas and lunch. We finally gave up on the otters at 7:15 this evening and headed home. Just as Roaring Mountain was coming into view we saw a sow grizzly and a 1 year old cub. I am not sure but I think it was the Beryl Springs sow. They ran from the east to the west side of the road and we stopped. They were really close so I handed Verne his camera and he started shooting at a really high ISO. They were so cute!! They both stood up on their back legs and sniffed towards the 3 cars that had stopped. Then they went out in the grass and started eating. By that time it was 8:00 pm and not enough light left to photograph them. They then decided it was time for a little road trip. They walked to the road and began walking north. Two guys from Oregon were behind them. They had never seen a grizzly before and they were thrilled but they stayed back far enough not to scare the bears. We followed them all the way past Dynamite Curve to a little north of the Grizzly Lake trailhead. It took almost 25 minutes but it didn’t seem that long watching them occasionally turn around and look at the parade they were leading and to watch their feet. I have a thing about lion and grizzly bear feet. Once the bears moved off the east I looked to the west and saw a wolf running north. It was really getting dark so we couldn’t tell if it was a gray or black wolf and it disappeared into the trees fairly quickly. It took us a week to see our first grizzlies and then we immediately got to see a wolf. Nice ending to a nice day!
Awesome!
The right place at the right time.
