I went to collect mayflies with my husband on Henry’s Fork of the Snake River last Saturday. It took us about 3 hours to get there, 3 to collect the insects, 5 to photograph them and another 3 to get home. It was a long day. We had company coming this week so Sunday I chose to stay home, sleep late, clean the trailer and do laundry while he went back to Henry’s Fork. We live about 10 miles north of Gardiner so to get to Henry’s Fork he drove through the west side of the park and out the west entrance. There is construction going on now between Mammoth and Norris on the west side of the park. There are delays but the real problem is there are sometimes bears in the construction area where there is absolutely no stopping. But they don’t work on Saturday and Sunday.

My husband got near the construction and saw this grizzly sow and cub looking photogenic among the mountain bluebells. He took photos for over 30 minutes and continued to Henry’s Fork and collected insects. He waited to photograph them until he got back home around 4:00 pm. After he photographed his insects we had dinner and he started looking at the day’s photos on his computer. He worked for a few minutes and then turned the computer around so I could see it and said “Do you like this mayfly?” This mayfly was actually the last photo you see here. He had been home almost 5 hours and never even told me he had seen grizzly bears, much less photographed them in such beautiful flowers!! That will teach me to stay home!

  1. Isn’t that the way it always goes. The day you stay home great things happen. Didn’t go fly fishing with my husband, and he sees a moose. Still haven’t seen one and only two days left of our vacation.
