Another wild day in Yellowstone with 8 wolves seen before 9 a.m., or was it 8? Not the best for photo ops but exciting for intrigue and mystery.
First of all, I saw two wolves at the carcass near Wraith Falls. Guess that I missed 965 by seconds as he lugged a big hunk of meat over the top of the hill and out of sight. The two remaining wolves were Dark Black and a multi-colored female that was doing some howling.
But, I got hints of something happening in Lamar, though I do believe it was supposed to be a secret for the privileged few to enjoy. I went that way anyway because some people knew the news.
Ah, yes, the Lamars were out. But, with a twist. There were two extra blacks to the south and they seemed to be amusing themselves with elk, bison and other critters. They were comfortable, looking very healthy and confidant, though not having much luck with hunting.
Meanwhile, 926 and her group were to the north with a small carcass, no doubt another bison that was still born. First time moms with Brucellosis will abort their calves and there seems to be quite a few this year.
926 disappeared and returned to den and the two, supposed Lamar yearlings, moved east and out of sight. We were all out there waiting to see what would happen next, last evening, but were disappointed. Only a howl and that was all.
Though, Bill did find a black way off and so that kept our attention for a few minutes. Rick thought it was 890.
The great scene of the day was this grizzly sow with 3 COY at Slough Creek. Quite a crowd gathered to watch the 4 bears graze up on the hill.
The cubs were just the cutest and quite energetic.
While waiting for a possible photo op of the sow and cubs this Yellow Headed blackbird serenaded us in the pond below.
After a long nap near the Lamar den area I went out exploring and was happy to find Rosie and her 3 down near Rainy Lake. We all hoped that they would cross for a swim and they nearly did but were frightened back so many times that they gave up.
But, it was nice to get away from the wolf action, or non-action, to visit with folks and see what else was going on in the park.
Speaking of other happenings – the day before I had two hikes, one to Lost Lake, which was just wonderful for some moments without crowds and noise. Although we did have to duck and dodge a big bison bull that was not happy with visitors.
The other hike was by myself on Specimen Ridge, just basically exploring. Here are some things that I found.
Judy spent her day down south, waiting for Blaze but the bear was not terribly cooperative as she did not come out until late and never got close. Apparently, Blaze had already gotten an elk calf or two. Way early for the calves to be born!
Until Later

Beautiful pictures on your hike. All animals look healthy. Love the yellow headed! They were here at my sanctuary last week and moved on. Thanks for your words and photos.
Isn’t Lost Lake beautiful. Alison and I did that one year and really liked that hike. Hope I get to see the Grizzly with 3 coy. Looks like great times in the Park for you Deby. Keep up the fantastic work and sharing your beautiful photographs. See you in a few days.
Thank you Deby for all you do!!!!
